UNION TOTAL ABSTINENCE SOCIETY.
The Union Total Abstinence Society met - hist evening, in the Mechanics’ Institute Hall. After an address from the President, Mr J. Granger, the clauses Of the Licensing Act relating to the hour of closing public houses, were, discussed,. and considerable dissatisfaction was expressed at the action of the Licensing Committee. ThAappearancebf drunken people in the streets on Sunday was also referred to. It was considered that something ought to be done in the way . of preventing these persons from obtaining liquor on the Sabbath day. It was resolved—“ That the President be requested to communicate with the Members for Timaru and Gladstone respecting the Licensing Act, which at present gives Committees power- to grant licenses to 12 o’clock midnight, and urge upon those Members the importance of having those clauses repealed in favor of a 10 o’clock hour of closing public houses.” The. next meeting will bo held on next Thursday week, when the Licensing Act will be discussed, the discussion being led off by the Roy. Mr Gillies. ;
