later than time-table date. The s.s. City of Sydney,., with the December colonial mails, arrived at San Iruniscco on the 27th ult. two days before time table date. ShippingThe ship Waitara and the barque Mercia arrived yesterday. They left London on the same day. FireWanganui, Jan. 3. A fire this morning destroyed the engine house of the .Wanganui Sash and . Door Factory. The main building had ft narrow escape, but was isaved by the splendid exertions of the Fire Brigade. There was no insurance. Loss of a ship hy fireChristchurch, Jan. 3. The ship Pbasis, that arrived from Calcutta on Sunday night, brought in part of the crew of the Dutch ship Alblasserwaard, bound from Shields to Batavia, with coals. She was found to he on fire’on Nov. 26, in 80E., and on Nov. 28th tho crew took to the boats, the ship being on file fore and aft. The boat containing the'master, second mate, and nine of the crew, was picked up by the ship Phasis on Dec. 4, in 29.30 S. 87E. The other boat bad the first mate, third mate, and ten of the crew. She was lost sight of the night that the crew took to the boats. A Heavy sea was running at tho time, and it was blowing hard.

Judgo Johnston, in addressing the jury congratulated them on the lightness of the calendar, and said there was nothing calling for special comment. Morgan Harper fpt larceny from a dwelling was sentenced to four years ; John William Crabtree, horse-stealing, charge not proceeded with; Frederick Ed - wards and. James' Hunter, for false declarations under the Marnage Act, were sentenced to six days’ imprisonment and fined £lO. Dunedin Caledonian Society- > Dunedin, Jan. 3. The Caledonian gathering was attended by fully 12,000 people, the largest at-, tendance it has yet had. Lindsay, the Victorian' pedestrian, carried off tho ' principal foot race as he, pleased, and Burke won the steeplechase.
