(Peb Press Association.) Murder on a Racecourse. Hamilton, Dec. 27. Yesterday a Native named Honi Tikerei was murdered on the racecourse at Oxford, near Cambridge. He was stabbed to the heart with a knife, and death was instantaneous' The affair is said to have arisen out of a bet for 5s between the deceased and other Natives. Two Natives named Peena Tatepara and Nukera Tepapa are in custody charged with the offence. An' inquest will be held to-morrow. Wilful WastePungabehu, Dec. 27. The Constabulary are engaged in pulling np the potatoes, both, here and at the Parapara, on both sides of| the road, on the land sold and on that reserved. The potatoes are pulled and allowed to lie, and the Constabulary have permission take what they require. Th crops being destroyed are those which have been sedulously guarded by Maori sentries, night and day, and are planted on what was once the famous wheat fields where the fencing prisoners were arrested. A Bubble BurstNew Plymouth, Dec. 27. The “ Herald” is authorised to contradict the statement re Te Whiti order, ing, through his son, the Natives back to Parihaka. Although Te Whiti s son has visited his father several times in gaol, it has been in the presence of the gaoler and an interpreter, and no conversation has been allowed between the two except referring to personal and family matters. An “ JSstbetic ” DramaWellington, Dec. 27. Harkins has commenced his season with “ The Colonel ” which proved a great success. CricketNelson, Dec, 27. The Interprovincial Cricket Match, Wellington v. Nelson was won by Nelson by one run and nine wickets. Accidental DeathGisborne, Dec. 27. Dr Percy died suddenly yesterday. He had been suffering from a severe cough, and during the previous night he by mistake took chloroform instead of the proper cough mixture. An inquest will be held. Deceased was greatly respected throughout the district, and great regret is expressed at his sudden death. • -The Holidays. • t Christchurch, Dec, 27. To-day is almost universally observed as a holiday in Christchurch. Yesterday over 12,000 persons travelled on the various tramway lines. Boxing Day in the SouthDunedin, Dec. 27. Over 5000 persons travelled on the Palraerston-Clinton sections yesterday, including 250 excursionists to .the Lakes. All the sports and steamer excursions yesterday were well patronised. Ihe weather was glorious. To-day is also observed as a holiday, but it is raining.
