South Canterbury Times, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1881.

Hii>, Hip, Hurrah! The Liberal cause has triumphed in South Canterbury, and we congratulate the electors on the result. On the evening before the election we advised the electors to return Mr Turnbull for Timaru, Capt. Sutter for Gladstone, Mr Postlethwaite for Geraldine, and Mr Steward for Wairaate, and they have done so. Our Sporting correspondent also “ spotted ” the winners, and more than that, ho i laced the horses exactly as the candidates were placed at the poll. The team that South Canterbury will send up to Wellington next session to i :;pix..cnt its interests wiii all pull together well. Mi Turnbull and lie Steward are well drilled in Parliamentary work, and they will be able to coach the two new members.

The result of the election returns all

over the colony shows a large accession of strength to the ranks of the Liberal party. We have had occasion, during the recent contest, to express our opinions very strongly in regard to some of the candidates and their political opinions, and the result of the elections has shown that the large majority of the public endorsed our views. We have no desire to gloat over our victory ; the victory itself is sufficient. The elections in South Canterbury were conducted without indulging in offensive personalities, and now that they are over we hope the people will settle down to their ordinary business avocations and forget past differences. They should remember the old proverb :—“ May difference of opinion never alter friendship.”
