HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.
SECOND EDITION
The annual sports for the boys attending the Timaru High School (and “ old boys ”) were held to day on the school grounds. The day was only moderately suitable. It was warm and the sun shone cheerfully, but a strong nor’-wester blew pretty _ The grounds are themselves covered with a good turf, however, and the country to windward is also beautifully green, so that strong as the wind was competitors and spectators were at least free from the dust that incommoded the people in the town. Indeed the charmingly green and fresh appearance of the grounds and neighborhood was itself a great treat to see fonthose of the visitors who had not been beyond the town belt this spring, and made the sports meeting much more enjoyable. The C.Y.C. Band were on the ground during the day and their bright uniforms added to tho cheerfulness of the picture, while their inspiring or classic strains added another element of pleasure. The visitors were not numerous during the morning, but _as tho afternoon wore on the gathering increased until the attendance became considerable. A large proportion were ladies, relatives and friends, no doubt, of the youthful athletes. Tho prizes won to-day will be distributed at the breaking up of tho school for the Christmas holidays, which takes place about the middle of December.
