In our next issue will appear our Japanese letter, No.. 2. It will treat of “ Banks, Bankers, and Banking.” Mr Richmond Thatcher’s new tale, “ Black Upon Yellow ” has been commenced in this number. We would direct our lady readers’ attention to Mrs Dreaver’s drapery announcement, which will be found in our present issue. We have received from Mr R.. T. Wheeler, a copy of Mr Marcus Clarke’s Christmas publication, entitled “ Four Stories High.” Our talented contributor, Mr P. Murphy, of Wellington, has sent us no “ Special telegram ” this week, but a new “ pome ” of his appears in the present number. Owing to the non-arrival of the Christchurch Time-table for December, in which several alterations have been made, we have been compelled to postpone tlie publication of our usual monthly supplement until next week. Professor G-usscott, a gentleman who undertakes to cure every disease “ which flesh is heir to,” sets forth the wonderful curative properties of his preparations in our advertising columns. It will be gleaned from an announcement in another column, that Messrs Clifford and Morris, the well-known photographers, have engaged a new staff of artists for their studio in Farley’s Arcade. The current issue of the JVew Zealand, Press JVews is a most interesting number of that ably-edited and neatly printed periodical. It contains two leading articles, several original contributions, and a quantity of judiciously-selected extract matter. By reference to our amusement columns, it will be seen that the members of the Shakespeare Club, assisted by a number of the best amateur vocalists and musicians ini the city will give a grand entertainment in aid of the Benevolent Institution, on the evening of Thursday, the 13th December, at the Temperance Hall. The President of the Club, Mr H. S. Chapman, will occupy the chair, and deliver an appropriate address. Apart from the really choice programme which will be placed before the public, the merits of the charity alone should secure a crowded house on the occason.
