LITERARY.
—Messrs Rivingstons announce “ The Reign of Louis XI,” by P. T. Willert. The author hopes to present in a form suitable to schoolboy or undergraduate “ a connected, a clear, and a tolerably full account of the events and the nature of a reign which left France a consolidated and powerful nation. ” —Messrs Macmillan and Co. have in the press a volume on “ Salvation Here and Hereafter,” by the author of “ Constantia,” a novel of Scotch and Australian clerical life, which came out in Good Words last year, and has since been republished under the title of “ Lady Hetty.”
—Messrs Triibner will shortly publish “ The Folk-Lore of China, and its affinities with that of the Aryan and Semitic Races,” by N. B. Dennys, Member of the Asiatic Societies of London and Shanghai. —Mr Far jeon has written a new drama, founded upon one of his stories, ready for the Olympic Theatre, where, however, the “Gascon” seems likely to hold the boards for some time.
—A story entitled “Jan, the Child of the Windmill,” by Mrs Ewing (daughter of the late Mrs Alfred Gatty) already well known as a writer for young people, will appear in a few days. - -Lieutenant Cameron will shortly publish a full account of his expedition in a volume to be entitled “Across Africa.” The work is in course of preparation.
—Among forthcoming books is one by Sir Thomas Erskine May, bearing the title of “Democracy in Europe: a History.” It will be in two volumes, and will be published by Messrs Longman.
