His Excellency, the Administrator, consented to accept, the office of patron of the sopety/ Eulogistic remarks were . made Concerning Mr. Cordery, the retiring president, to whose untiririg efforts the success of the society has been due. A public debate followed. Subject : "That the present store taxes, salary taxes and buiness license fees be replaced by an Income Tax." Messrs. Baxter, Nelson ind Grey affirmed; Messrs. Cordery, Wild and Woodward opposed the motion. The allocation of "yea" and "nay" sides was by lot —not choice of competitors. His Excellency the Administrator General Richardson, acted as judge and chairman. His "summing-up" is reported under a separate heading. After the three representatives on each side had spoken, those present were invited to contribute to the pleasure and benejit of the evening by giving their views. This .invitation was responded to, by some in a humorons vein and by others seriously. The Judge's decision went in favour of " commerce " by a considerable margin, but those on the other side were not disr leased to suffer defeat at the hands of such capable debaters. As this was Mr. Cordery s last meeting, the opportunity was taken, on beh&lf of ;".ie business section, to express regret at his impending departure from Samoa. In reply,-' Mr. Cordery emphasised the fact that good feeling had always. existed between his department and the business houses. The large attendance at this meeting (about seventy) goes to show that the public are prepared to take an interest in civic matters and in the affairs of the community in general. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by three cheers for the Administrator.
