Apia Park August Meeting.

Eujosable Iftertooi's Sport. Hemisphere's Popular Victory. While the attendance at Apia Park on Saturday last was barely up to the average, there was ro room for complaint regarding the quality of the sport provided, which was unilcrmly good throughout, with at least two tussles on the winning post of an exciting character. The attendance, which included His Excellency Col Tate, was a thoroughly representative one a* regards the'otd habitues ot the course, in addition to which were quite a Dumber ot new patrons, who app-ared thoroughly to enjoy the outing. The course was in excellent coufition, and it no new records wrre put up, the times for the respective events were well up to the Alter Ganymede's iairly easy victory over Star ,iu the opening event there was an exciting bout between Vampire and Pekakea tor the Pony Race, Schuster's representative' in the last tew yards making a great bid for victory. Untortunately Pekakea carried over-weight to the extent of thirteen pounds, but his display left little room for donbt that had the bandieappers' dispositions been adheied to, the positions ot the two leaders would have been reversed. Seventeen auimals contested theSchoolboys' Race, which is always a popular feature on the card, way being then made lor the Military Handicap, reduced to a contest between Pegasus and Black Prince. The black gelding had had little or no training, while Eastgate invariably turns his charge out in the pink of condition, and the issue, was hardly ever in doubt The Open Handicap attracted three starters, the contest between Hemisphere and John Bull, who dead heated in the same race over six lurlongs at the last meeting, being anticipated as the chief attraction 01 the afternonn. Little Billee set out at a cracking pace for the first tour furlongs, when his rivals speedily made up the leeway. Hemisphere taking a slight lead of John Bull at the turn beyond the Judge's box, a little farther on John bull came at his opponent, and the pair raced neck and neck for some distance, but the Aleipata horse came into the straight with a slight advantage, which he maintaineo uniformly to the finish, the victory being a . very popular one with the crowd. Tne Isiand Handicap came next, and another stirring finish was witnessed, Star coming up rapidly at the winning post. Pekakea, who was again handicapped with an excess of 11 lbs beyoud the handicapper's allotmeut. gave a fine oisplay, in contrast to the poor show made by Vampire, who fell completely away a: the half distance. The concludiog event tornished the most liberal dividend ot the day, also an unusual diversion, caused by a bovine stranger, who intruded on the course while the race was in progress. All the horses save the rearmost avoided the danger, the whippt-r in striking the cow broadside on, with the result that horse aDd iider tolied over and the coo no donbt received the surprise ot its life. Foilunately nothing more serious occurred. Details of the day's doings are appended : Tie Propue. 1. TnrAi. Handicap Ist Prize, £6 with half the entrance tecs of £ I 4s added ; 2nd prize, £1 10s.
