TOWN BOARD BY-LAWS

To the Editoi

SIU, —I think the following facts are of such interest that they should be made public.

The Warkworth Town building by-laws have been tlie cause of complaint for many years and the reply from members and officers of the Town Board has always been "They will be better when we get the new ones."

-. The new by-laws came into force on the Ist April, 194.0. As soon as I could I bought a copy and read them through, noting various bad points, which I the same day pointed oub to. the chairman of the Town Board, hoping that steps would he taken to bring them more into line with usual building practice.

I might mention that; the* clauses which I noted included every one which deals with wooden construe* lion and also the one which deals with chimneys.

As no action was apparently taken after several months I sent the following letter to the chairman : —

"As a local builder who does his own designing, I would like to point out to you and the Board, the extremely unsatisfactory position re the by-laws, particularly the following clauses:—Nos. 9, 11, 12, 17; as the requirements of them are not according bo the usual practice in good work. This means that for any building clause 44 has to be relied on to bring a permit under the by-laws, and I think you will agree that it was intended only for special cases. What is still more unsatisfactory is that the Board is using clause 37 to make regulations which are nob even hinted at in any part of the by-laws. As I have mentioned in conversation, if I can help-in any way to make the by-laws more clear or reasonable I would be very pleased to do so."

(Note~the clauses mentioned are the only ones dealing with wooden construction.)

That letter has not yet been acknowledged nor do I know of any action being taken., and as this Board apparently made these by laws I think they should take steps to amend them. —I am, etc.,

E, V. Moore

[Mr Moore's letter to the Board was again tabled at the meeting on Monday. No action was.taken— Ed.J
