MATAKANA.
(Our Own Correspondent.) Gift Afternoon. On the occasion of her approaching marriage Miss L. Wilson was accorded a gift afternoon last week. Arrangements were in the hands of the Matakana Entertainment Committee and the afternoon was a very pleasan'- one. Items were rendered by MilS Bromley and Mrs H. M. Smith and Mrs Reg. Smith was the winner of the competition. Miss Wilson, who was the recipient of many useful gifts, and a host of good wishes, thanked her friends for the pleasant afternoon and for the kind thoughts which prompted it. The function closed with musical honoius to the bride-to-be. Ladies' Anglican Guild. There was a poor attendance at this month's guild meeting, caused by the very inclement weather. However, much good work was accomplished, including the distribution of work in preparation for the annual bazaar, which it is hoped, will be held fairly early. Hostesses for the .afternoon were Mesdames W. Sharp and H. M. Smith. Surprise Party. A very pleasant little function was held at the home of Mrs Geo. Smith on a recent Sunday afternoon, when Mrs J. W. Smith was the guest of honour at a surprise party On the occasion of her birthday. The function took Mrs Smith entirely by surprise and was thus doubly pleasant. The afternoon tea table was complete with a birthday cake surmounted with the number of candles appropriate to the occasion. The guest of honour blew out all the candles in one breath, thus proving to her friends that she is still sound in wind .and limb. Football. > Wellsford v. Matakana. Wintry weather made conditions slightly unpleasant at times for the players at^ Matakana on Saturday. The wind.was blowing the length of the field, thus providing a very real advantage to the team playing with it. Matakana won the toss and elected to play against the wind. Wellsford had the best of the game in the first spell and the score at half time was 11 —0 in their favour. Martakana, however, picked up in the second half, with the wind, although Wellsford's' lead was too great for •them to catch up and the score at ,the finishwwar 1s r17 —13 to Wellsford. Pairama, for Matakana, struck 'his top form at this match .and played an outstanding forward game, while McKenzie and Leng were the strong men of the Wellsford side. Mr Fergusson was referee. Card Party. Ten tables were filled at the Matakana Church of- England card evening on Saturday last. This was taken as being an exceptionally good attendance, considering the weather. I'iize-winners were Mrs Coley and Mr H. M. Smith, while Mrs Watson and Mr D. M. Jones were runnersup and Mrs 11. M. Smith and Mr W. J. Dunning qualified for the consolation prizes.
