Concert
The Presbyterian Ladies' Guild were responsible for a very successful function on Friday evening last when they arranged a concert, several sideshows and a stall. A very good attendance ensured the financial success of the evening and those who were responsible have every reason to feel pleased with themselves.
Items were rendered by Mrs Linton (piano solo), Mrs H. M. Smith (soprano solo), Miss.Findlay (soprano solo), Muriel Smith and Noeline Watson (pianoforte duet), Miss Bromley (piano solo). Mrs G. Anderson, in the role of song leader, succeeded in producing excellent volume during community singing. The stall was well patronised and competitions including candle-blowing, cork-spearing and throwing a pingpong ball through the mouth of a ludicrous cardboard face, all did their part in the extracting of the nimble sixpence from the reluctant pocket. S After supper, Eev. D. B. Stewart made a short speech of thanks to all the helpers whose efforts had contributed to the success of the evening. Cards and Dance. The Hockey Club arranged the first dance to he held in Matakana for some period on Saturday evening last. The appreciation of the younger set was evident by the way they attended and the whole function proved a very pleasant one. The older people arranged about nine tables of cards on the stage. The pdzes in this section were won by Mrs Coley and Mr A. H. Smith, with Mrs Watson and Mr^R. S. Jones runners-up. Mrs Withers and Mr Scholium provided the music for the dancers who made the most of it. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Y. Jones and Mr L. Yearbury. Mr Keg. Smith was M.C. At a special 500 competition between Matakana and Leigh played on Wednesday evening last, the former had an easy victory, scoring 25,310 points to Leigh's 18,100. Football. The Pakiri-Matakana match played at Pakiri on Saturday provided a disappointing exhibition of football for the spectators. There were few highlights in the game, most of it being colourless. Pakiri forwards saw most of the ball in the set scrums and their backs pursued those advantages fairly well. Haddon, on Pakiri's right wing, put in some pretty running and was unfortunate in not -.^scoring more than once. Pakiri's game all through showed a fair degree of solidity against a very ragged defensive game by Matakana. Scorers for Pakiri were Watson who potted a goal from, a free kick, and Haddon whose try was converted by MacKinnon. For Matakana, Harper scored with a penalty kick. A very tine attempt of Pairama's in the second half, when he took a kick in play from near the twenty-five yard peg, narrowly missed adding to Pakiri's score. The final score, B—38 —3 rather .flattered Matakana. Mr J. Bond was referee.
