Fancy Dress Social

The ' young ' people of the' local hi'ijie class wei/e responsible last woek "for a very successful night's entertainment in the shape of a fancy dress social. All hands were in gala dress and the scene was a very pretty one. There were some very funny and original costumes and the following were outstanding: —Mr Bob Bremner as Mother Goose with a live goose as his partner, Miss Mary Trafford as Bobby Jones in loud plus ityvs with clubs complete; Miss Doris Parkes was a very realistic old fashioned grandmother in silks and satins and mittens. There were gipsies, pierrots, and pierrettes, all of whom looked very sweet. Games were indulged in and a very nice supper was served,, the whole evening being voted a great success. Women's Institute. The monthly meeting of the Port Albert branch of the Women's Institute was held last Thursday when there was a fair attendance of members. Mrs G. H. Smith presided and there was a large amount of business tabled for discussion which was put through expeditiously and satisfactorily. Mrs Dubi,; fram,the Wellsford branch, was present and gave a demonstration of soft toy making which iwa)s much appreciated and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the commentator. A pleasant break in the proceedings was the presentation of a gramaphoneitem, when the audience were afforded the opportunity of hearing Mr Birrell O'Malley the well-known Auckland tenor in his first recorded numbers. This record was very greatly enjoyed. The roll call, "breakfast recipes" was well responded to. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames G. H. Smith and F. G. Broad and Miss Marjorie Smith.

LECTURE ON CURRENCY REFORM

Last Wednesday evening the Port Albert Hall was the scene of a goodly gathering of local folk who had assembled to hear an address by Captain Rushworth, M.P. for Bay of Islands. Mr W. K. Becroft occupied the chair. The speaker gave a most interesting and lucid address which was followed with the keenest attention. At the conclusion, Gapt. Rushworth wa? accorded a hearty vote of ihanks, this being carried with acclamation. During his stay in Port Albert, Oapt. Rushworth was the guest of Mr Reg. Shepherd.

DEMONSTRATION BY AGRICULTURAL DEPT.

On Wednesday afternoon the district was a hive of industry when all .roads. le<| to Mr, Ray Gubb's farm- wheVe Mr Collins, Govt. veterinary instructor, was scheduled to give a demonstration All interested in dairy farming, even the upper school under the care of the headmaster, were present with notebook and pencil and as the majority of the scholars will no doubt follow their fathers' footsteps, the lecture would be of use to them. The Port Albert Methodists staged a concert last Saturday nignt which was a success and in consequence the coffers of the Church should be. considerably replenished. The following artists contributed to the programme :— Mesdames Rayner, Busbridge, Meek (Auckland), Culp'an, and Jows'ey and Messrs Western, Shepherd (Ruawai), Yarr and Warren. . . GOLF. . : Mr J. Gray, of Wayby, won the president's trophy run in conjunction with the .qualifying rounds of the Albertland championships. Mr Harvey Grant, also of Way by, won the bogey handicap match in the men's section, whilst Mrs Orin Grant accounted for the bogey match in the ladies' section. Mr Harry Riley, of Avondale, is spending a short holiday in the district, recuperating after a recent breakdown. He is at the Bradford homestead.
