WELLSFORD NOTES.

TENNIS. The weather which threatened al£ morning on Saturday, kept off until 4 p.m. and this enabled most of tb#* tennis players to got: in some practicematches. As the .^ingles competition is being held at Way by on Saturday, each player is anxious to get in a* much practice as possible. VVelLsford played a 'married' versus 'single' match and when the raitt stopped play the sk.s were 8 all. It is hoped to finish the match before Uhristmas.
AMUSEMENTS. Last Thursday the most successful entertainment yet araged in the Well©ford hall was put on by the local school children Under the tuition of Mr Bromley and Miss Murray, the head teacher and assistant, the 'SleepingBeauty' pantomine showed what could be done, and great credit is due to them. The performance was carried through without a mistake and thesinging, dancing and acting of thechildren were praised by all present. There was a record attendance and over £24 was taken at the concert alone. After the concert supper was provided by the local ladies and then dancing was carried on till midnight. The proceeds are in aid of a new shelter shed and when the subsidy is -added the amount ia haud will be £50. On Mond iy night Mr Victor Prines' and his associates gave a very good performance "The Midnight Murder."
MEETINGS. Two meetings were held last Wednesday evening, the first a Rugby Union meeting in the 'Bank' and the second a Show meeting at the Farmers* Trading Stores, Several men attended first one and then the other. The Rugby Union decided, to present the shield won by Port A.I bert and the cup won by Wellst'ord at the annual ball on Wednesday eveningr Those at the second meeting, thirty members, discussed the letting of the contract for levelling tbe new ground, also the financial arrangements for same.
SALE. The monthly sale of A. Buckland & Sons was held last Friday. The yarding was a small ooe but, prices were good. 00-v beef sold up to £9 while springing cows made up to £10----yearliug steers sold at £5 15a each and yearliug Shorthorn heifers at £5 os. A. lew pig's of medium quality sold cheaply.
GENERAL. The new tea rooms opened lasfr month have had installed a good lighting system and now people may get supper any evetiiug. Ttiis place is growing in popularity daily as was shown cm Thursday after the concer!; when about 30 people patronised tha rooms and had an -enjoyable supper. As strawberries are becoming more plentiful one might even get strawberries and cream for their supper from now on. The agents for the Whippet car& have been very busy Lately and Messrs Anderson and F. Tread well have had. to get two more for their clients, M.t W. Boag and Mr C. Littin. Even though the weather has not been good, several paddocks have had the hay gathered from them, while a. number of farmers are making ensilage this year.
PERSONAL. Mrs N. A. Worker is still in Auckland and is feeling the benefit of rest and treatment. Mr T. Hiudman has not made quitethe progress expected, ami he is atill coufiued to his room. Mr and Mrs Bert, Davies spent a few days iD the city before moving intotheir new home
