THE POULTRY RUN.
LEGHORN FOWLS
It is safe td assert that since ike Leghorns landed) in England in 1870 no other breed qS fowls has clone so muck for the commercial side of poultry culture, and the term ?7egg jnachines'' is well applied to them by, those who hay« by careful selection built up a strain of birds solely for egg production. It ia well nigh impossible to over-estimate tha utility qjualities' of the true original Leghorns. The chickens are robust, qu;ck growing, and, consequently contribute to the egg basket at an early age. The Leghorn—that is, the utility type of Leghorn—is, when matured, an egg-p/oducing fowl, its flesh being far short of the quality desired, in edible poultry. 'Still, the.cockerels' if killed at a& early age Make toothsome
dishes. The Leghorn fowl has one great advantage over its relatives of the poultry yard and that is that it is a small feeder] indeed, given the run of a rich pasture during the spring and slimmer months, it is well nigh capable of supporting itself. The breed is hardy, being little affected by climatic changes, and though kept to advantage on a free range, it settles down contentedly in limited quarters, and if rightly fed and exercised, renders an excellent account of itself as an egg producer. There is nothing more suitable for the town poultry keeper than a good pen of utility Black Leghorns, whilst for the man possessed of a grass range a flock of the white variety will take some beating, eitnar as attractive subject's or as producers of high grad« eggs.
