COST OF WAR.
.Colonel EUnfeej.^aLwell-known German authority on war arid economies, published recently "a remarkable study of the cost of war. He shows conclusively that a war would no more ruin a great State to-day than it did in the past, and that Germany would! not be seriously hit by a year of warfare. The cost of a year's war to a power which has 3,000,000, men in the" field, would not be more than £550,000,000, or about ten shillings per day per man. This would include the first heavy/ cost of mobilisation, extra fortification works, etc. On the first weeks of war would go about an eighth of the sum mentioned, including- about £62,000,000 to cover the increased demand for gold in civil life and business. The State would have to provide £130,000,000 during- the first three weeks of war. Colonel Henke predicts that Germany would easily stand the cost. The first year's war would not cost more than 5 per cent, of the national wealth1, and would be easily wiped out by the savings of from four to five years of peace.
