THE ELEPHANT'S STORY.
In India, far across the ocean, they call me ';My lord the Elephant." I am the largest ,of all the land animals in the world. My eyes are small and lively. My ears are broad and long, and they hang down like fans on the sides of my great head. My legs are thick and long. My neck is
so sh,ort that Mother Nature gave me
- this trunk to reach for my food and '' drink. All children love to see me feed myself. I often draw a lot of water into my trunk and take a showr er-bath. lam mouse-coloured, but some elephants are white or creamcoloured. My tusks supply valuable ivory. In India men mount me when they go on tiger-hunts. In the olden times we were used in war. For loading" and unloading" ships in some countries, we are used for the heaviest work. We elc«fcjj.t^'Vts are very fond of each other, a^,?s\ve always travel in herds. Sometimes iooo of us are in one herd in the jungle.
