EXTRAORDINARY FINGER NAILS
Men and women belonging to the upper classes of China take great pride in the length of their finger nails, which often attain enormous length. In Siam, Annam, and Cochin China, this extraordinary custom is practised sometimes to indicate that the wearer leads a religious life. The nobles of Annam permit their nails to grow to such a length that the hands are absolutely useless for any practical purpose. The nails of the second, third and fourth fingers are often four or five inches in length. On the first ftnffev njone the nail is kept short.
