PETROL-DRIVEN LOCOMOTIVES.

Several petrol-driven locomotives are now at work in Great Britain. In one instance the locomotive operates underground in the Rampgill Mine, near Alston, Cumberland, for a distance of nearly three miles in a narrow level, taking in 23 empty waggons and bringing out the some number of full ones with a gross tonnage of about 40 tons. Grades of about 1 in 66 are encountered, and there are also reversed or "S" curves. The locomotive has replaced as least four horses and their drivers.
