THE MAGIC PAPER.

Fill a wineglass to the brim with water, stretch a small piece of paper across the mouth, then invert the glass. The water will be found to remain in the glass, being kept there by the pressure of the atmosphere on the paper. Now bring the whole over the flame of a candle or gas jet, and if there is any of the paper jutting out, you may set fire to it, and allow it to burn itself out without in any way disturbing the course of the experiment. Hold the paper immediately over or in the flame, and keep the glass steady, and it will be found the paper will be only blackened, not burned. Water in this way may be boiled, the containing flask consisting of paper only.
