The mutineers barricaded themselve- in the barracks, turning machine guns ou the loyal troops who, hurrying up, surrounded the building and a fierce battle ensued for several hours with many casualties. Order was gradually restored. Anarchists ar Piombino caused food riots, looting residences and shops. Hand grenades were freely used until the troops by a volley killed and wounded many.
