MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Marton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Saturday morning. Present. The Mayor Crs. Sutcliffe, Holder, Bill and Harris. Letter from Fullerton-Smith and Co. re Lyon Street.—The borough solicitors wrote stating that this question is largely one of evidence which at present we have been nnable to procure. We are having a search made as to the deposit of the plan, etc. Letter from Public Trust Cffice, Wellington, forsvardiug cheque for £I6OO (less expenses) for borough workers’ loaii. Letter from Mr Frank Brice, asking Council to fix a price for purchase of Marton Town Hall and site.—The Mayor—Or. Sutcliffe, that Mr Brice he infoimed that Council is not prepared at the present time to enter into negotiations for the sale of the property. Letter from Mr W W Thomas, asking Council to supply a gas stove for Technical School free of charge. —Crs. Holder-Sntcliffe, ThutConncii will supply a stove at cost price when next shipment arrives.—Carried Crs, Sutcliffe—Htirris, That the Mayor be appointed this Council's delegate to attend conference at Feilding re the setting up of aa Electric Power Board.—Carried. The Mayor' —Ur. Holder, That the Health Inspector he asked to complete his house to house inspection of this borough from Signal Street to Bond Street and all intervening streets—Carried The Mayor—Or Bill, That the borough foreman be empowered to procure backets for elevator at a cost of £355 on the recommendation of the Works Committee —Carried Resolved, That Council Increase the price of gravel to ratepayers to 2s per cubic yard and Is per cubic yard •jto Rangitikei County Council, borough foreman to see that no metal be taken from the pit without hie authority and that quarry be placed in his charge. With regard to Mr John Hart s application to lease piece of an unused roadway in Wellington Road Council decided that • no action be taken in the mutter. Letter from Auditor-General, returning balance-sheet with exception taken to Mr Ohas. Hunt’s deposit of £8 being refunded to him He states that the legal ruling is that ’ a statutory penalty or charge or anything of such a nature as that under consideration cannot lawfully he remitted except by some legislative or judicial authority as so to d© would obviously bo to defeat the intention of that law which imposes consequences for certain conditions. Under these circumstances I have no option but to require your Council to make a refund of the sum in question (£3), failing which it will be my duty to surcharge Councillors with the amount. Mr Ohas. Hunt was a candidate for Councilor who forfeited his deposit of £3 because he was a servant of the Council as dog registrar, and was therefore ineligible to stand for the Council. Mr Hunt asked the Council for a refund of his deposit and it was given him,—A request lias been made to Mr Hunt to refund the amount to the Council,
