A SERIOUS CHARGE.
Following the smart arrest by the Wellington detectives of ;two men named James Alfred Martin, aged 31, and Herbert Williams, alias Bert Brown, aged ‘-39, on a serious charge and their remand to Auckland, the two accused have been committed for trial. When the accused appeared before the magistrate, Chief-Detective McMahon said that they were implicated in the case in regard to which Franklin John Smith was recently committed for trial on a similar charge. The case was one of the worst that had ever come before the court. The girl alleged that she was taken to the house by Smith under promise of an interview with a theatrical manager. There she was assaulted by three men, one of whom she identified as Martin. She could not positively identify Williams as the third man. After corroborative evidence had been given as to the girl’s movements on the night in question, and as to a medical examination, also as to accused’s movements, the accused pleaded not guilty, and were committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was fixed at one surety of £2OO in each case.—N.Z. Times,
