A ROMANCE OF THE WAR.
By the approvaLof the King, the London Gazette states, the Military Cross and bar which were forfeited by Temporary Second Lieutenant Adam Thompuon Stewart, Machine Gun Corps, will now be restored to hiru in recognition of distinguished services subsequently rendered in the field. As a sergeant in the sth (Territorial) Scottish Rifles, Adam T. Stewart, 89 Springburn Road, Glasgow, went to France early in November, 1914. He was wounded in February, 1915, and later returned to France as sergeant-major, in the Machine Gun Corps. For his coolness and bravery in holding a position at Guinchy in September, 1916, in the course of which he saved the lives of hia commanding officer and a gunner, he was awarded the Military Cross. He later gained his commission and won a bar to his decoration.
OVER-DINED AND CASHIERED. On the day the armistice was signed, after he and several others had dined, there was a disturbance, and Stewart was cashiered and lost his decorations. Afterwards he went to Russia as a corporal scout in the Royal Fusiliers, On three occasions he was recommended for the restitution of his commission on account of gallantry. "On the iirpt occasion he reconnoitred a Bolshevist poistion and gained important information. He captured on another occasion two enemy sentries who were guarding a strategic point with a machine gun, and his final exploit was to penetrate nearly eight miles into Bolshevist territory and blow up a bridge, thus blocking the onlv route by which the enemy could send reinforcements. Second Lieutenant Stewart has now been demobilised.
