RACING LIBEL ACTION.
R. SIEVIER SUBS R. WOOTTON. London, March 10 The libel action brought by the well-known racehorse owner and sporting journalist, Robert Sutton bievier (formerly of Melbourne) against Richard Wootton, the equally wail known trainer (formerly of Sydney) for distributing a pamphlet on the racecourse on Grand National Day, 1918, which purported to give Siovier’s history, began in London on March 3d. Sievier, in opening his own case, explained how he left the Victorian Club, in Melbourne, 33 years ago, and described the Lord Deerhurst incident. He added, “In Australia the}' boast that they are free of drawing room trimmings, but it is not so. “ He was asked to resign from tbe Club, he said; he was not expelled as a defaulter. After a return to London bis presentation at Court was arranged, but the arrangement was cancelled because ho had been a bookmaker in Australia. The jury returned a verdict for Wootton. [The plaintiff in this case, whilst be was in Melbourne, was known as Robert Sutton, and was the first bookmaker to introduce cash betting into Australia. Lord Deerhurst was A. D. C. to Sir Henry Loch when he was Goverfior of Victoria. As the outcome of "a quarrel in a Melbourne hotel, Sievier (or Sutton) was fined in the District Court for assault on Lord Deerhurst. ]
