NATIONALISATION OF MINES.
VOTE AGAINST DIRECT ACTION United Press Association—By Elec trie Telegraph—Copyright. London, March 11. A special meeting of the Trades Union Congress assembled to consider action to compel the adoption of Nationalisation of Mines. Mr J H Thomas presided, the delegates representing over five million w’erkers. On a card vote a policy for direct action was rejected bj' 3,870,000 to 1.050,000 votes. It was subsequently decided, by 3,732, 000 to 1,015,000 votes, to continue political action. A meeting of the rank and file at a convention organised by shop stewards resolved in favour of a general strike tor the nationalisation of mines. It further resolved to favour the creation of Soviets in Britain. In this connection delegates are meeting on the 12th to establish Soviets in various parts of the country. The Minors’ Federation declined to accept Mr Smillie’s resignation of the presidency owing to ill-health, and urged Mr Smillie to take a long rest.
