SPORTS AND SHOW.
RECORD REVIVAL AT OHINGAITI All through the long war period sports were held in abeyance at Ohiugaiti, but with peace thoroughly established it has been decided to resume the sports and show. The initial gathering took place on Wednesday and proved an unqualified success. Entries were large, competitors coming from a wide area. The weather held fine, and the attendance, despite strong counter attractions, was mucn better than anticipated. The committee is indebted to Mr Chas Mclntyre, who placed his picturesque property, an ideal sports ground, at the disposal of the Society. The athletic evenis and show exhibits took place on the top of a pretty bush-sheltered terrace, which formed a natural grandstand, from which the public could watch the equestrian events in comfort and safety. Mr R A Gower, who conducted the sports, started his programme well up to time, and had the assistance of a strong enthusiastic committee in keeping events moving—theie were no weary waits and no complaints Everything went off without a hitch. The numerous entries in some of the events necessitated curtailing the programme. Mr D Bteut made an eflicient.starter, and tho experienced handicapping of Mr P Coyle resulted in finishes which made the work of the judges —Messrs Perry and Osborne—no easy matter. Mr W Bartlett had ample scope for exercising his judgment in the horse jumping. Fields were large and the jumping excellent. His decisions were not disputed. Judging of cattle was entrusted to Mr C Stent, sen. In show events the points prize donated by Hon D H Guthrie, was won by Mrs J Geodwin, the ccp for Onen Jumping, hunters’ style, was won by Wini Paranihi. An extra event was added to the programme, a Consolation Jump, for which Mr R A Gower generously donated a ten guinea Gup, which was won by Mr M Stent. The secretarial arrangements were in the capable hands ot Mr H Paget, who is to be congratulated on much of the success of the gathering. The Society started this meeting without any credit balance, aiid is to be congratulated on the faet that donations and cash taken for the day totalled £l7O. This will leave a good sum in hand for next year’s gathering, which it is intended to make one of the attractions of the Main Trunk. The catering was entrusted to a committee of ladies, and their work was well done. The committee received many congratulations from visitors on the excellent management and general success. In the evening a concert and dance was held, and again the attendance ( was large. Mesdames Coyle, Rule and D Halkott rendered an overture,, and songs were contributed by Mesdames Coleman and Parkes, Misses England, V Meyer, I Meyer, Caird. Laing and Mr M Knight; duet Mrs Parkes and R Perry ; recitation Miss Ethel Amer ; pianoforte solo, Miss V Meyer; dialogue, party of Mangaweka girls. Accompaniments were played by Mrs Coyle, Miss England and Mr J McCavv. The various contributors were in good form and the concert was a great success, as was also the dance. Results.
