THE FRENCH RAILWAY STRIKE.
United Press Association —By Elec--1 trie Telegraph—Copyright Received March 4, noon Reuter Paris, Peb 29 The General Confederation of Labour announces that it supports the railway strike. Many mobilised railwaymen failed to respond to notices calling them up. In view of the General Confederation assisting to control the strike it is regarded as probable .that the strike will soon extend to other unions. Government is confident of its ability to control the ‘situation, and is taking stringent precautions to maintain order. Large numbers continue to volunteer to maintain the food supply and the transport system. The police raided the office of the newspaper Lihertaire, and warrants have been issued for the arrest of the authors of articles therein, urging 1920 conscript and railway men to rebel, desert and pillage The Times. London, Feb 39 The Times’ Paris correspondent states that the gravity df the strike situation hourly deepens. Both sides are sitting in continuous secret conclave. It is rumoured that the strike leaders are in commnnicatiou with Lenin and Trotsky, and other leading Russian Bolsheviks, hot the chances of a revolution are considered small. The French people are solid, and unlikely to risk what they have for anything the Bolsheviks may offer. The crisis does not surprise anyone closely following the results of last election. The present position is the direct outcome of the khaki wave, by which the most,, daring extremists were excluded from Parliament and are now forced to adopt unconstitutional and revolutionary measures.
