SANDON SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL

The residents of the Sandon district are invited to attend a meeting to be held in the Chambers on Monday evening next for the purpose of receiving the report of sub-com-mittees and to decide finally what form the memorial to men who represented the Sandon district in the great war shall take. The district has been canvassed by a subcommittee consisting of Messrs W. J Peacock, W. E Pearce, A E Egliuton and A E Penny. This committee set out to collect a sum well in the vicinity of £BOO, the estimated cost of the proposed memorial. It io exceedingly (satisfactory to know that although the canvassing committee have still a few residents to call on, and the district only covers a radius of a few miles, they have been promised a sufficient amount to know that their object willjjbo easily realised. The committee have endeavoured to call on every resident, but as they wish to know what amount will be forthcoming before the meeting on Monday evening they will appreciate voluntary response from those who were absent when the canvass was made. They realise that it is the genuine wish of all to subscribe to such a worthy object. During the canvas the committee have shown the subscribers a plan of a proposed entrance to the school grounds. They wish it to be clearly understood that this is only a suggestion on behalf of a sub-com-mittee appointed to select several designs with costs to be submitted to the meeting on Monday evening. Although they recommend this design and site they invite those who have other suggestions to attend the meeting where the most suitable proposals wifi receive the majority support.
