The Labour Gazette reviews the coal output week by week since June and shows that between 23rd August, when the coal strikes were over, and 27th September, when the railway strike ■ began, the weekly output under the seven hour day arrangement averaged 4,457,321 tons, representing 6% per cent, reduction, compared with the earlier normal periods under the eight hour day. It is pointed out that the experts on the Coal Commission predicted a drop of 12% per cent, and even Judge Sankey and Mr Redmayne, after allowing for possible improvements in methods and appliances, estimated a fall of 10 per cent. There is some likelihood of revision of the 6s per ton increase if the returns continue to be favourable, as the Board of Trade based the increase on a 10 per cent, reduction.
Received Oct. 23, 10.30 a.m. London, Oct. 31,
Tne coal output during railway strike week was 2,871,610 tons, compared with 4,481,434 the previous week.
