HURRICANE AND TIDAL WAVE.

IN THE TONGAN GROUP. Per i’Tasa Association. Auckland, Juno 10. The Talanc, which arrived this afternoon, brings further news of the recent hurricane and tidal wave in the Tongau group. The most serious damage was at Haapai. There were three distinct tidal waves, the third going 488 feet inland. Smaller waves followed for a period of 24 hours. Several small vessels were wrecked on a reef six miles away, while another lighter was lost altogether. The American schooner Otelia Fjord, loading timber, had about 20,C00 feet.of her cargo washed away. All Government premises on the be*ch were practically wrecked. At a store on the beach was gutted Two small islands disappeared altogether. The estimated damage is £GOOO. No lives were lost.
