LAUNCHMAN’S FINE RECORD,
What is possibly the world’s record in respect of the number of rescues carried out by one man is held by a Grimsby launchman named William Whiting. He always seems to be on the spot when life is to be saved. He started when only 18 years old by saving two lads from drowning in the Albert Docks at Hull, and his record to date stands.— Saved from drowning 3b Saved from ice accident Saved from fire 24 Saved from suicide 5 In 1899" he was present when 80 persons fell through the ice, and he was instrumental in saving 28. hor this he was given a silver cup and 60 guineas. , , At Withernsea, Hornsea, and Bridlington he has saved several At Scarborough he entered, at great risk, a burning building by climbing up a water spout and saved seven persons. He rescued a woman from being run over by a train and he has received the personal congratulations of the and Queen for his many acts. He has received 11 silver watches, besides silver cups, medals and money for his services.
