FIRE AT OPOTIKI.

Per Press Association, Opotiki, June 4. A fire started in the heart of the town this morning. Shops owned by J. O. Arthur, and occupied by H. E. Battle, bootmaker, J. Steptoe, saddler, and a building owned and occupied by H. Larmer, tobacconist, were completely destroyed. Insurances total £IOSO. All the occupiers are heavy losers. The brigade was promptly on the scene and prevented the spread of the fire to adjoining buildings. A large plate glass window in the shop on the opposite side of the street owned by W. Oakes was shattered, a distinct bullet hole remaining in a portion. The heat from the fire was not considered sufficient to break the window. The police are investigating.
