Giving evidence before the Northern Fisheries Commission to-day, the president of the Northern Fisheries Union said £lO, or £l2 a week for a boat worked by two men. was the average return prior to the coming of trawlers. This was mainly the return from lina fishing. At tmt time, it would cost about £3 10s a week to ran a boat, leaving £2 10’ or £3 a week for each man. He was of opinion that there was a large quantity of small fish killed by the trawls which did not come to the surface. He was of opinion that many email fish took shelter in shells on the bottom,as many small fish had been found in mussell shells, and it was reasonable to suppose that they had saken shelter there and had been crushed by the trawler.
