TAIHAPE NOTES.

From Our Own Oorrrespondent. On Wednesday evening there was a large and representative gathering of the public at the Town Hall, the occasion being a conversazione, ostensibly to wind up the affairs of the Epidemic Committee, but in reality to make a presentation to Drs Sinclair and MoDiarmid in appreciation of tneir splgndid services during the recent epidemic. After the first portion of the musical and vocal programme, the Mayor (Mr A B Arrowsmith) said that although the affairs of the Committee were being wound tip. if they were unfortunate enough to have a recrudescence of the epidemic the committee would be revived. During the past five years he had officiated at many functions, but the one in which he was taking part that evening was the most pleasant he had been concerned with daring his term as Mayor. If any man sacrificed himself for the good of the community, it was fitting that his work should be recognised. During the epidemic one doctor went down with influenza, and the other took his place. The doctor also went down, bnt both responded gamely to any call that was made, even though neither were in a lit state of health to do so. They attended every case possible, and neither stopped to ask: “Who is going to pay?” At the auxiliary hospital “they attended to eighty-two patients, and although there were lour attendances each day by- the two medical meo, they had made no charge'for their services. , On behalf of the people of Taihape and distnc the Mayor presented Drs. Sinclair and McDiarmid with two pieces of silver plate suitably inscribed. The proceedings were most enthusiastic throughout, and the appearance of Drs. Sinclair and McDiarmid was greeted with ‘‘For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” In responding, Dr. Sinclair praised the work which had been done by the committee during the epidemic His work had not been so difficult as the work of the Committee, the members of which had undertaken duties which they had never before attempted to do. Dr. McDiarmid also referred to the work of the Committee, to the strenuous efforts of which body was due the stamping out of the epidemic.

The annual picnic and sports in connection with the Booth’s Mill School were a great success, as was also a social and dance which was held in the evening. Trophy prizes were won by the following:—Miss Gladys Oavanagh,- Tanmatao Sammy Wiripu, Jack Wilson, Mrs W Taki and Miss Oavanagb. The folio wing are the names of men who are returning from the Front to this district by the Zealandio, which is dne to arrive shortly:—Lancs-Corporal L M Ellis (Hangatana), Privates F T Feunessy and F I T.l Rees (Kaurimu), Private J Sullivan iQhutu), Privates A K Gardner, H.
