MANGAWEKA NOTES.

From Our Own Correspondent, On Moulay evening the various committees appointed to arrange Mr Gascoigne’s valedictory social met and reported progress. Owing to Taihape Shew being held oo Wednesday, 26th, it was resolved to hold the function on the evening of the 25th, and to appeal to the ladies to provide the refreshments. The treasurer of the Red Cross Society has remitted to Wellington a cheque for £32 Is 6;i, the proceeds of one shop and part of another, in aid of the chaplains’ fund. This will be equally divided between Roman Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian Chaplain Funds. Miss Thatcher, representing the No-License League, has spent a week in our mid st. Asa result of her visit some thirty names of deceased and non-resident persons will he removed from the electoral roll, and an almost equal number, inadvertently overlooked by a less nimble agent, added. In course of a conversation with the proprietor of the Eutt and Petone Chronicle the other day he said that there was a possibility of the defunct “Settler” being reborn. Let ua hope so. We can carry a newspaper, a chemist, a painter and paperhanger, and a resident plumber. In each of these departments of industry there is more than a mere living awaiting somebody. We have got a saddler and jeweller; the town is filling up a little. But, like Twist, we ‘‘want more. ”
