Tbe Ashburton County Concil discussed tbe compulsory military training scheme. The following resolutions were carried: The Council views with alarm Oclonel Chaffey’a statement re holding training camps as it lias appeared in the public press, and is stronglv of opinion that now the war has ceased this training is unnecessary and burdensome to the community in general. In the Council’s judgment, no system for defence of the Dominion should ne introduced and passed by Parliament before the electors have an opportunity of expressing their views through the ballot bos. The Council also thinks the time has arrived when the Territorial system could be advantageously abolished, and the Government be urged to use every means to bring returned soldiers back to civil life.
