THE JUGO-SLAVS.
The majority of the Jugoslavs who have been required to perform national service under the Regulations appear to have decided to defy the authorities. A very large number of these aliens were given leave ot absence from various work when the epidemic w»s prevalent. At Xmas they did not return to work and the Commissoner (Mr Cullen) announced that they would be given until January 27th to return, but there has been no response. It is known to the authorities that many have “disappeared” with the intention of doing no more Government work, and others aie'.sheltering behind medical certificates, which the authorities believe to have .been rather easily received in some quarters. What course of action is to be taken to deal with these defaulters is now being considered. Yesterday morning informa tion was received that a party of the Jugo-Slavs employed on works near Paeroa “struck "work,” |but no details are yet to hand.
