THE INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC
GREAT RAVAGES IN SOUTH AFRICA SOME HEAVY DEATH ROLLS. Capetown, October 23. A Pretoria message states that the epidemic there is assuming alarming proportions. There is also great distress in country districts. The over use of quinine and aspirin is taking toll of the Batch population. The military are rendering energetic assistance to tlm civil population. At Robert’s Height cantonments there were 1800 cases, but the value of discipline and organisation is demonstrated by the low death rate compared with that of civilians. A Johannesburg message states that during tbe Hast twelve days a thousand deaths have occurred, of which 300 were of whites. The Bloemifontein death roll is over a thousand, whereof a hundred were whites.
