BERMAN INCREASED RESISTANCE.
ENDEAVOURING TO REGAIN INITIATIVE. A BIG GUN CONCENTRATION(Auet. and N.Z. Cable Association.) London, Sept. 5. The United Press correspondent states that in the endeavour for the moment to transform the retreat into a stand-off artillery battle, the Germans are not losing their big guns, which are far in the rear on all points British advance, and which are supplementing a Birong line of heavy and light machine guns along the Canal du Nord. A storm of shells is methodically dronping along the present front line, and there is an extensive nse of gas, flooding the valleys and woods, and indicating that Hindenhnrg is seeking to obtain the initiative, at least in the matter of his own retirement. The troops in Monancourt district were held up at the canal not only by machine guns, hut by heavy shells, permitting the Germans to essay a counter attack which, however, was repulsed.
