BREAKING ENEMY’S STUBBORN RESISTANCE. 111 BATHE Ort A PLATEAU. (Aast. and N.Z. Cable Association,) London, Sept. 4. French communique: After breaking stubborn resistance by the enemy, our troops to-day compelled him to retreat north of the Oise and the Vesle front uetween the Canal du Nord and the pise, our advanced elements following on the heels of the enemy :rearguards advanced beyond Libermont, reached the outskirts of Esmery-Hallon (south-east Ham) and occupied Hospital Wood. Further east we crossed the Ailette and reached Manzelle, northeast of Manicamp. The enemy left numerous guns and a vast quantity of material. The battle continues on the plateau north of Soissons. Threatened on the right bank, the enemy retired nortli of the Vesle. We captured Bncyelonq aud Moncel, north of the Aisne. Further to the right we crossed the Vesle on a front of thirty kilometres. We passed Ohassemy, Brenelle, Vauherlin, Vauxcette, and Blanzy, and gained a footing on the crest north of Baslieux.
