MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.

The Military Service' Board continued its sitting at Martou to-day, when the following appeals for exemption were dealt with Frank Lban, Mangaweka—Adjourned till October sitting. P. W. Suckling, shepherd Pohonui, on tha ground of interest and undue hardship Decision reserved sine die. £ Eugene John Hurley, farmer, Hunterville. Withdrawn. David Wilson, farmer Hunterville Appeal dismissed. George Auvell Wheeler, farmer, Taihape; Olassg 02’Appeai formerly dismissed. E. Moon farm manager, Manager, Class O. Appeal withdrawn and formerly dismissed. Archibald Yardley, farm hand, Martou. Class C2. Appeal with drawn formerly dismissed. Albert Henry Wing, farmer Marton. Class 02. Appeal withdrawn formerly dismissed. Henry Samuel Harris, bootmaker, Mangaweka, public interest and undue hardship— appellant stated that he was 28 years of ago and he had two children. He asked for a medical re-examination. The Mangaweka doctor expresed surprise that appellan thad been passed. He had set the wheel in motion to bring this about. A doctors certificate was submitted — The Board could not feel its way clear to recommend the applicaton and the appellant’s case was heard. Appellant asked for total exemp tion. He stated that he purchased the nusiuness in in 11)14 and bad not made any particular effort to sell the business pending the bearing of bis application for medical re-exemption—Further hearing adjourned till the October sitting. Henry Ernest Gardner, (Mr Miles) working for the manager, Turakina —Evidence was given by Mrs Rodgers, Turakina Valley to the effect that appellant was in the employ of witness’ husband, who was ill. appellant was very satisfactory and witness was afraid that if Gardner was taken they would have very great dicffiuly in re-

placing him. They had previous eperiences with other farm hands. They paid Gardener £l4O per annum and meat at cheap rates, and allowed him a free cottage; the use of a cow The appelant gave evidence that the farm carried 15)00 sleep and about SO cattle. He was a ploughman, It was intended to plough about ten acres this year— Adjourned till November sittings, employer in the meanntime to make efforts to find a substitute. John Richard W. Cole, farm hand Bulls. The employer appealed for extension of time. Evidence was given by Cole that he was principally engaged in agricultura work. He had ploughed anout 80 acres so farm, 30 acres of which were going down in wheat. H e had as much team work beweeu this and Christmas as was possible to get through. Witness in reply to Captain Baldwin stated that personally he was not appealing-. Mr Miles explained that leave was desiresd until after the harvest. Appeal dismissed with leave to January. Donald St. Clair McDonald, (Mr Gascoigne) farmer, Tiriraukawa, undue hardship— Appellant was 40 years of age. His farm was 325 acres and he purchased it six years ago. 200 acres were in grass. The farm could not pay a manager. All his neighbours were in a large way. They were short handed and they were each assisting the others. De cision reserved sine die. Herbert Edwin Goile, (Mr Ladley) farm contractor, Turaidna. Public interest and undue hardship— Appellant took work as ploughman, etc., on contract. Then he finished ploughing; he started on the harvest and was kept going reaping and binding and stacking. His father and mother were of German parentage,and both were in Australasia-, practically all their lives — Appeal adjourned for furtner information. Charles Henry Brough, farmer, Turakina. Undue hardship. A p pellant gave evidence that he had been in occupation of his recent farm for three years. He had sold his cows, contemplated going in for sheep. He had seven brothers. He had tried to dispose of his property, without success. Adjourned till November sitting. Joseph Casey, shearer, Taihape, application for re-hearing,. No appearance. Appeal dismissed. Charles Frederick Wallis Hammond. Mr (Gascoigne) Ohingaiti. Appellant state that he farmed 600 acres. His farm was six miles from Ohingaiti. Adjourned until October sitting. William Lockhart Shergold, dairy farmer, Taihape. Undue hardship— Appellant stated thta he was farmiung on his father's property. His father was 70 years of age—Decision reserved sine die. Ohingaiti. Appellant stated that he owned 550 acres, which carried 200 sheep and 90 catle. His brother who owned the adjoining property was in camp. Appellant was looking after that property also. The arrangement between himself and brother was that whoever was called np first should go into camp and the one remaining at home would look after both properties. Under that arrangement he had over 2000 sheep and close on 200 cattle and horses to look after. His brother David, and another brother in Prance also owned about 1500 acres. The former was looking after the absent soldier's propery. It was j hrrdly possible for his brother, I who was turned down as medically I unnfit, to underake the management of any further properties. Further hearing was adjoured till October. Tangi Taylor, half caste, farm manager, Ohakea, public interest and undue'hardship Appe 1 allowed. John Henry Saunders, confectioner Taihape, undue hardship. |Appellant asked for time to sell his business. He had advertised the place' If given, say three months, he thought that would he suflicent time to make satisfactoy arrangements to dispose of his interests— Further hearinng adjourned nutil November. Duncan Paterson, shepherd. The Board adjourned the case sine die; the reasons being that Paterson was 43 years of age; that the shepherds under him were ineligible and that he was a particularly good man.
