MANGAWEKA NOTES.

From Onr Own Correspondent. A very distressing accident befell a little girl, a daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Bailey, of Kawhatau, one day this week. It appears that several children were playing with a pony, jon which two wore mounted. One of them began fall ing off, though the pony was standing quiet, the victim of the accident, in endeavouring to catch the failing child, was thrown to the ground, and had one arm broken in two places. She was quickly under medical treatment, and is now progressing as well as may he looked for under .the circumstances. The big land slide on the Kawhatau Cliff Road has proved an even greater encumbrance than was at first anticipated, and a very large staff of -workers has been necessary to clear a way for vehicular traffic. The slip, which bus become colloquially known as “eraiger’s Special.” extends more than half way across a broad portion of the Rangitikei River, and has forced the current over on to the fiat at the base of tiro opposite cliffs Very large entries are advertised for the next Mungaweka stock sale to be hold on Thursday. The market in this district appears to have a burdening tendency, now that there is more certainty of getting the stock railed away.

There will be no full Red Cross Shop next Thursday, hut the ladies of the Presbyterian Church will conduct a refreshment stall in the patriotic shop rooms. All visitors to the town on that day may thus obtain light refreshment at a moderate rate, and at the same time do something to help forward Red Gross work.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mangaweka School Committee was held on Monday evening, there being present. Messrs A. H. Gas- : coigne, cliairman, A. Amer, and | Rev. J. McUaw. An apology for i absence was received from the see- i retary, Mr H. S. Harris. £ho ] minutes of the preceding meeting; were read and.passed without discus- ; sion. The headmaster’s report for j January was received, and showed-j that the school had opened with a | poor attendance in comparison to | the number on the roll. This had : gradually improved. AH children 'who had sat for the • Standard_ VI j examination had passed, and gained 1 proficiency certificates, including one candidate for scholarship. The | report stated that the time had now | arrived when the electric light, i should be installed in the school | premises as a whole, or at least in I the headmaster’s house. Application j ot the Committee to have this i brought to the notice of the Board j was duly made. “The report also expressed regret at the transfer of I Miss K. MacOormick, and asked I that several small repairs be done at the school.—lt was resolved that the Committee ascertain the cost of having the light installed at the school, and then bring the matter under the notice of the Educition Board, with a request that fin nci T assistance might be granted for the carrying out of this important work. A letter was received from j the Secretary of the Education j Board notifying that Miss V. Keane I had been appointed temporary assistant teacher at the Mangaweka School, in place of Miss MacOormick. —Accounts totalling £i> 8s were passed for payment. The Chairman and Mr Amer were appointed a Visiting Committee for the current month, with instructions to investigate .particularly repairs to the windows. A request was received from the caretaker, asking for requisites for cleaning purposes. It was decided to authorise the purchase of a good broom, the other items to be left in the hands of the secretary. A meeting of the committee which carried out the recent Sunday School’s picnic was hold on Monday evening, when the balance sheet was present by the Rev. MeCaw, and showed a satisfactory state of affairs, the balance being on the right side. The committee passed a vote of thanks to all who had contributed to the funds or to things in kind that had made the function so successful, special mention being made of Messrs D. Muuro and Co., for gifts ot sweets, E. Managh, for bread, and Colhs Bros., for meat for sandwiches. Mr A. H. Gascoigne paid a warm tribute to Rev. and Mrs J. Me haw, who had placed their grounds at the disposal of the committee, and to whose untiring work, the speaker said, the success of the day was mainly due. The motion of thanks was carried by acclamation, Rev. McCaw suitably responding. Owing to the opening of a Territorial Camp on the 27th iust., the Girls’ Bandage Club has found it necessary to alter the date of its Red Triangle Day Concert to Tuesday, the 2eth inst., as the later date would have seriously interfered with the programme, owing to the absence on military duty of a number of performers. The tickets are now on the market, and a full programme of vocal and instrumental items, dialogues, tableaux, and elocution, both grave and gay, is promised. Congratulations are extended to Mr D. Dalzieil who succeeded on gaining scholarship marks at the local school’s examination in December. He was the only candidate for this honour, and the gaining of it reflects credit on both himself and his teacher., Mr W. Adams. Dr Dowling, who has been practising here for sometime left this week on an extended holiday. Her many friends will regret to learn that her departure from the district is permanent. The local practice will be taken over hy Dr Parker, a returned soldier, who has already made a good name for h imself in this district.
