SWIMMING.

MARTON SCHOOL SPURTS. A plensant afternoon’s sport was arranged by the teachers of the Marton District High School at the municipal baths yesterday afternoon. Recently the paths had been tarred and sanded, and the flower beds and lawns being cleaned and neatly trimmed, the grounds presented quite a picturesque appearance. The advancement in by the pupils of the school was very pronounced, and it was really surprising to see the number of entrants that toed the line in the numerous events, there being probably over seventy boys and girls taking part in the sports. Some of the juveniles showed such a proficiency that before long they will be able to take their place in the championship meetings. Mr W. Thomas made an efficient handicapper, the finishes being very close and exciting. As starters Messrs Burgess and Thomas got tne fields away in an exemplary manner. Miss Hull acted JJis secretary, and, with Mr Ryder and Miss Cartwright filled the positions of judges.
