RESCUE BY DESTROYERS.
COURAGE AND SKILL. SUBMARINE DRIVEN OFF. London, Fob. 10. The Associated Press correspondent, telegraphing from a port in Ireland, says that American oliicers eulogise the daring and seamanship displayed by British destroyers at the time the Tuscaniu was sunk. Many soldiers jumped into the sea when tho Tuscania listed. More were preparing to follow, when a destroyer dashed up to the starboard side and took off hundreds of men. .. s she was departing another destroyer emerged from the darkness on tho port side, which was now high out ot the water. When the soldiers recovered from the surprise of this unexpected skilful manoeuvre they scrambled to reach the elevated port side. Many slid down the hull,- some slipped clown by means of ropes, others on their hands rnd knees. this was done in tho coolest possible manner. Those not taken of” by the plucky destroyers, which risked, snaring tne Tuscani-Ds fate, were Uter picked up by trawlers, which swarmed to tiro scene. Tho Americans said tint tl:o most impressive tiling of tho whole experience wbs the prompitudo and precision with which tho British naval men handled their craft. had just hognn rescue work when the most exciting moment of tho night occurred —a submarine in a few mimves discharging three torpedoes et tho destroyers. Tho watchfulness of tho lookouts and the splendid so-manship foiled the attack", mu! all the destroyers immediately counter-attacked with gun and bomb so effectively that if tire submarine was not sunk, it was afraid to reappear.
