The Assembly, by 33 to 22, .uloptoil General Botha’s motion leave of absence to General Smuts. Tne Nationalists strongly opposed the motion, declaring 'that they were nor concerned as to what General Smuts was doing for the British Empire, but they w anted ,to know what he w;s doing as a Minister of the Union. General Botha replied that peace might come at any time, and General Smuts would then look after South .Africa’s interests at the Peace Conference. Rebutting the Nationalists’ complaint, General Botha said that as an integral part of the Empire they had to do things which in ordinary circumstances tliev might not have dreamt of. He intended to stand to the Empire because South Africa’s future depended upon it.
