HALCOMBE NOTES.

From Our Own Correspondent. The earthquake which occurred at about 1.-15 on Wednesday morning was felt in Halcombo as a shake of rather more than average severity. Down tins way wo are apt to pride ourselves on our indifference to these manifestations of natural phenomena, but the first shako of •Wednesday morning was much too violent to be pleasant. Another shock was felt at about b. 50 tho same morning, but it was only s baby in comparison with the earlier.

On Thursday night next the Kakariki Glee Club intend giving a patriotic concert in the Meeting House at Kakariki, the proceeds- tu go to the Soldiers’ Comforts Fund. This Glee Club is of very recent formation, and is said to he welt worth hearing. There is to be a dance after the singing which will cost gentlemen one shilling apart from the charge for the conecrt. Dailies will be required to bring a basket of eatables. The Returned Soldiers" Reception Committee met on Saturday night, Mr Jo)in Morrison in the chair. Am counts totalling £l4 odd were passed ior payment, leaving a balance in hand of about £5. In view of the tact t!u.t in tho course of u few weeks a reception will 1)8 given to three more of our returned warriors, and' as the Committee would like to treat the returning soldiers cs those who have previously returned have been honoured via., presenting to eacli a gold medal suitablyfiiiscribed, the money in tli© hands of the treasurer will need supplementing. It was there-, fore decided to hold a concrrt withthe idea of getting the herewith all to enable the Committee to carry out their very laudabls object. Tho treasurer of the Committee Intimated that it was not an easy matter to collect funds, but tho chairman said he was sure the public would not allow our brave boys to come homo, and retire into private life without receiving some little token of the people’s appreciation of their gallant conduct in going to light for us all.

Tim band was playing out on. Saturday night, and drew quite a crowd of appreciative listeners. The inspector for Noxious Weeds, Mr Walton, was in Halcolmbe a few days ago, and made a few rather facilious remarks about tho affection some of oar residents seem* to have for thiat lovely plant gorse. Mr Walton s <ys ho soiit out notices some month-3 ago re clearing tho pest, and while a number of people have complied with the request, others June not done anything to keep the prickly horror in subjection. Mr Walton is always against using tho powers with which lie is invested, namely issuing sommonses, but he is afraid ho will have to make an example of several who seem to think they can treat the law as a joke.
