A search steamer discovered that Mackenzie was tho solo survivor of the schooner Crete, which was wrecked by a cyclone on tho nineteenth January. When tho capsized tho captain and Ills son. and two seamen in the cabin were all drowned. Mackenzie and another seamen were washed off. The other was drowned and Mackenize drifted to an island, where he spent nineteen days. Ho. had little food and was making a raft with kerosene cases. Ho attempted to reach another island, but lost tho raft and sam back. Ho spent ten more days on the island and built another raft. He readied a settler’s house on Marble Island almost exhausted from starvation.
