AMUSEMENT TAX.
DISCUSSED BY MANAWATH A. AND P. ASSOCIATION".
The Amusement Tax got a good thrashing at the A. and P. meeting yesterday. The term “amusement’* seems capable of-’a very wide interpretition. As one member remarked: “If the Oommissipuer thinks we get any fun coming down here, lie is mistaken. ” Anomalies h ve crept in, and there does not seem any definite basis of calculations, so far as A. and P. Associations are concerned. This was apparent from the sneaf of letters received from kindred societies* stating their case, and asking this society’s intentions in regard to the matter. Mr Hodder: “Are we going to ho brow-beaten by the Commissioner of Taxes? It seems to me that there wants to ho some unanimity in regard to these associations. From tnese letters, they aroevidcntly electing us to take the lead. ” He then proposed that the presidents, secretaries and treasurers of all A. and P. meet in conference, either here or in Wellington, and then wait on tho Commissioner of Taxes, and see the Council of Agriculture, and getsomething definite. ■' Her a good deal of discussion as to the wisdom of hanging up the business in order to await the setting into motion of the machinery of the Agricultural Council, Mr Hodder added the clause to his motion that if they had not called theconference by the 13th February, they would do it themselves, and in this form the amended motion was carried.
