From Our Own Correspondent. During the last four weeks £4OO has been forwarded to the Wellington Centre by the local branch of the Red Cross Society. At tiie last meeting of the Executive it was decided to allocate £_’s to the Italian Red Cross.

The heavy rain of Monday night caused a number 4 of slips on the roads of the Rangiwaea district. At Rakatepauma there was a particularly heavy one near the school and the road still remains blocked.

The St. Margaret’s Parish School opens again next week. The new head-mistress is Miss M. Short, of Auckland, formerly assistant at the Stanford Girls’ School at New Plymouth.

The conduct 5, of five young men who visited the local swimming hath on'Sunday 1 st was the subject of an inquiry at a meeting of the Swimming Club on Tuesday evening. The young fellow’s in question, had, it appeared, visited |the bath at a late hour at night and a great deal of annoyance had been occasioned residents in the locality by the boisterous antics of the offenders. Although each of the culprits had tenderedan apology, it was found necessary to meet out some punishment, and the Club decided on disqualifying them during the pleasure of the committee. Mr W. Gieseking, of the Bank of New Zealand, secretary of the local Sw’immiug Club has been transferred to Greymoutlr and left by Wednesday morning’s express. Jack Hayes, a returned soldier, iu the employ of Mr J. Collier, Ruanni met with a bad accident on Sunday' afternoon. He was riding a horse down a steep face, and after getting near the bottom the horse began to play up. Though Mr Hayes retained his seat he suffered severe internal injuries. Owing to the bad state of the roads caused by rain and slips, the doctor was delayed iu getting out and the sufferer could not bo brought into town.

Taihape’s popular officer, Constable , Manly, has received notice of transfer to Marton. During his time in Taihapo ,Mr Manly hss made liosts of friends, and although much pleasure is expressed at his promotion, all will bo sorry to lose such a courteous and obliging officer.
